Please note: I will not be reviewing the movie itself, but rather the quality of the film on Blu-Ray, and the special features made available on the release. For a movie review, please check EmpireOnline.com
The Video Quality
The video quality of this release on Blu-Ray is fantastic, and is really second to none. It is now that we are entering the true era of films being made to look good in HD, and Quatum of Solace is no exception to this. Compared to the previous multiple releases of the last bond film (Casino Royale) on Blu-Ray, I feel the quality of video on this release is better. I did find the video at some point grainy, however have since discovered that this was done on purpose to have a particular effect on the viewer.
One thing that I did find, is the contrast on this release does seem a little high at times, and thus the picture quality of the more detailed aspects of the film can suffer a little.
The Audio Quality
The audio on this release is presented in DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround Sound, and is truely perfect. Surround sound best suits films such as this one in my opinion, particularly due to the action constantly taking place. I always find the Bond films tend to have a fantastic soundtrack, and it is great to hear the soundtrack playing throughout the movie on the Blu-Ray release. The audio is always crystal clear and there are no blips. Top notch!
The Special Features
I must point out at this point that there are no Blu-Ray exclusive special features on this release of the film. I am disappointed by this, but I guess they will do what they did with Casino Royale and eventually release another Blu-Ray with an additional disc. All of the special features appear to be displayed in full HD, with the exception of the 'Crew Files'.
The Making of featurette is good (on the Blu-Ray it is known as 'Bond on Location') and runs for just over 20 minutes. Quite an interesting watch, it is always good to go behind the scenes of James Bond movies. I would have liked to have seen it run a little longer though.
I am not a big fan of the 'Crew Files'. There are just over thirty of these on the disc, but all are in SD. They are also fairly boring to be honest. I have found out that these were originally available only on the internet, so that might be why they are not all that great.
The trailers are of course there in HD, nothing much to say about those.
It is cool to see the music video for the Jack White and Alicia Keyes duet, "Another Way to Die". The song has grown on me a lot, and this was an expected special feature of the Blu-Ray.
There are a few other small featurettes that are broken up into between 3 and 5 minute chunks. They are fun to watch, but you're not really missing out on anything if you don't bother watching them.
Final Views and Ratings
Whilst the film here itself was not as well recieved as it's predecessor, the Blu-Ray release is decent. The quality of the video and sound on the actual film is second to none, and cannot really be complained about. I would have loved to have seen more special features, and specificially more exclusive ones for Blu-Ray, as I feel this may make people simply buy the DVD rather than spend that little bit extra on the Blu-Ray.
Video Quality: 9/10
Sound Quality: 10/10
Special Features: 5/10
Overall Rating: 7/10
